Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepted the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday, pledging to be a president who unifies the nation and brings a practical approach to governance if elected in November.
Addressing the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Harris spoke to viewers across the political spectrum, emphasizing her commitment to serving all Americans.
“I will be a president for everyone, one who brings us together around our shared goals,” Harris declared. “A leader who listens, who is grounded in reality, practical, and guided by common sense, always advocating for the American people.”
She also highlighted her focus on strengthening the middle class, calling it a personal mission given her own background.
Echoing themes from President Joe Biden, who recently stepped aside to endorse her candidacy, Harris seized the moment to differentiate herself from the incumbent’s low approval ratings, promoting a “new way forward.”
“We have a unique opportunity with this election to move beyond the bitterness and division of the past,” she stated. “Let’s come together not as partisans, but as Americans.”
Harris’s speech concluded a convention marked by calls for unity and optimism, countering attempts by Republican nominee Donald Trump to portray her as far-left.
She criticized Trump, labeling him an “unserious man” with serious potential consequences if re-elected. Harris warned that a second Trump term, coupled with recent Supreme Court rulings, could lead to unchecked power. She also condemned Trump’s immigration policies and reaffirmed her commitment to bipartisan solutions.
Additionally, Harris expressed support for Israel while addressing the complex situation in Gaza, and she vowed to stand firm against authoritarian leaders, contrasting herself with Trump’s approach.
