APIA, SAMOA – The Office of the Acting Prime Minister has confirmed that the HMNZ Manawanui vessel ran aground off the southwest coast of Samoa on Saturday, 5th October 2024. A report issued this morning, 8th October, by Captain Dowling, Commander of Operations, and Afioga Fui Tupai Mau Simanu, Chairman of the Samoa Marine Pollution Advisory Committee, provides the latest update on the situation.

“There is no evidence of oil spillage onto the reefs or ashore as of 1030hrs this morning,” the report stated. It noted, however, “small leakages of oil coming from the vessel,” which have been contained using specialised equipment deployed at the site.

A full assessment of the situation is expected later today, according to the report. A team of divers and marine experts has been deployed to the site, where they are working to prevent further environmental damage.

In the meantime, marine scientists are testing the waters and nearby beaches for any traces of contamination. The Acting Prime Minister, Hon. Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio, urged the public to report any oil sightings or concerns and return any property believed to be linked to the incident.

“We appreciate the public’s support and assistance in this matter,” said Hon. Tuala.

He stated that authorities are working at full capacity to address the situation and thanked the public for their patience.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
