A bus carrying newly arrived Tongan seasonal workers rolled over this morning between Rotorua and Taupō, injuring at least 12 people.

St John responded with four ambulances, two helicopters, and a rapid response unit. They also sent a manager, four clinical support units, and a major incident support team.

Of the 31 people assessed, 12 needed hospital treatment while 19 were uninjured. Five people with minor injuries were taken to Taupō Hospital. Rotorua Hospital received three people in moderate condition, one with minor injuries, and one in serious condition. Another two patients, one in moderate and one in serious condition, were airlifted to Waikato Hospital.

Immigration NZ’s Pacific manager, Mike Sorensen, confirmed the bus was transporting 30 Tongan workers to the Hawke’s Bay to start work with Mr Apple. The workers had only arrived in New Zealand early today.

“Our thoughts and best wishes go out to the individuals and families affected by this accident,” Sorensen said, adding that Immigration New Zealand is working with Mr Apple and Tongan authorities to provide support.

Recovery work at the crash site continued throughout the afternoon, with a tow truck brought in to upright the bus. Police reported that the crash happened around 7:30 a.m. on Broadlands Rd, and while the road has reopened, it may take months to determine the cause.
