Apia, Samoa – The National University of Samoa’s Faculty of Business and Entrepreneurship, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC), the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Wellington, and the Goethe Institute, recently co-hosted a special Museum Talk highlighting a unique chapter of history. Dr. Hilke Thode-Arora presented her book, From Samoa with Love? Samoan Travellers in Germany 1895–1911: Retracing the Footsteps, at the Samoa Culture and Arts Centre in Malifa.

Afioga A’eau Christopher Hazelman, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Education and Culture, warmly welcomed attendees and introduced the keynote speakers. Among the distinguished guests were Hon. Seuula Ioane Tuā’au, Minister of Education and Culture, and Mrs. Winnie Switakowski, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Wellington.

Hon. Seuula emphasized the critical role of storytelling and museums in preserving rich and diverse histories. He highlighted how Dr. Thode-Arora’s research illuminates the motivations of Samoan travelers to Germany over a century ago and the importance of cultural exchanges in shaping Samoan identity abroad. “Our museums serve as spaces for dialogue, sharing, education, and reflection,” he said, adding the importance of addressing colonial histories for a more inclusive future and exploring the challenges and triumphs of cross-cultural interactions to foster understanding, respect, and cultural pride.

Mrs. Winnie Switakowski delivered the second keynote, expressing admiration for the initiative and its role in strengthening collaboration between Samoa and Germany.

Dr. Hilke Thode-Arora, a renowned German social and cultural anthropologist and Head Curator of the Oceania Department at Munich’s Museum of Five Continents, shared her research on the personal narratives and historical contexts of Samoan travelers and their significant roles in cultural exchanges between Samoa and Germany.

The event concluded with a performance by the National Orchestra of Samoa, Gigiliulaofatuga. The music celebrated Samoan culture while reflecting on the complexities of cultural exchanges during colonial times. Dr. Thode-Arora’s work encourages a reevaluation of historical narratives with compassion and openness in confronting the past.

The National University of Samoa and the Museum of Samoa expressed their gratitude to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Goethe Institute in Wellington for their generous support and collaboration, which made the event a success.
