Laaulialemalietoa Polataivao Schmidt, a guest at the EFKS TV Samoa Soalepule Program, has emphasized the importance of reducing the dependence on imported food and produce. Speaking to Paiali’i Tapuala, the host of the program, Laauli stressed the need for Samoans to grow and preserve their own crops, seafood, and seashells.

Laauli’s department has been advising villagers to plant and nurture Samoan crops and seafood rather than buying imported products like boxes of chickens. He recommended that Samoans should grow their own chickens and cows, which would not only provide fresh and healthy food but also insulate them from the impact of global food shortages and rising prices.

While Tapuala pointed out that it takes time to grow crops, Laauli responded that the benefits of self-reliance outweigh the convenience of buying imported goods. He acknowledged that it may be challenging for people to work with their hands and grow their own food, but it is a more sustainable and cost-effective approach in the long run.

Despite opposition to the government’s self-reliance programs, Laauli urged Samoans to prioritize growing and preserving their own food. The rise in prices of imported goods is also affecting local produce like taro, with some consumers reporting high prices. It is unclear what is causing the price of taro to go up, but it could be due to transportation costs, chemical costs, or other factors.

While Laauli’s message of self-reliance is important, it may be difficult for many Samoans to work for their food. The Agriculture department may need to consider how to support people in transitioning to a more self-sufficient lifestyle. Nonetheless, the message of reducing dependence on imported goods is crucial for Samoa’s long-term sustainability and resilience.
