The 2023 SIGFA International Fishing Tournament in Samoa has come to a thrilling conclusion, with anglers from around the world showcasing their skills and passion for fishing in the South Pacific.

Despite challenging weather conditions, including strong winds and heavy rain, the tournament continued to impress with some impressive catches being brought in by participants. On the fourth and final day of the tournament, all eyes were on defending champion Pafuti Tupua, a 67-year-old fishing enthusiast from American Samoa who was on a mission to take back her crown. Fishing on the Double Trouble boat, Pafuti claimed first place for female anglers by landing a massive 14.55kg Wahoo and a 47.4kg yellowfin on the same day, showcasing her determination and competitive spirit.

The tournament saw many other impressive catches, including a Marlin that weighed 159.95kg by angler Ryan Simpson of the Fua II boat, and a Wahoo weighing 17.8 kg, which was the largest catch in the entire tournament. The tournament was not just about fishing, however. The event also offered various other activities, including cultural performances and local cuisine, making it a well-rounded and exciting event for all participants and spectators.

The tournament was made possible through the generous support of various sponsors, including Farmer Joe Samoa, Return To Paradise Resort & Spa, Ah Liki Wholesale, Taumeasina Island Resort, and many others who helped create an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

On the final day of the tournament, the anglers were eager to make the most of the ideal moon and tides for a great day of fishing. Despite the weather being a bit unpredictable, the anglers persevered, and with persistent effort and patience, they managed to reel in a good catch by the end of the day. The catch of the day included 7 Yellowfin, 8 Masimasi, and 2 Wahoo, and there were some exciting announcements of successful tag and releases.

Team Kiwi, a group of four skilled New Zealand anglers led by their captain Skipper Steve Penn, also had an impressive showing in the tournament, securing a third-place finish. For Dean Wright and Shirl Dobson, two of the team’s members, fishing is a family tradition, and they’ve been doing it for a combined 80 years.

Overall, the SIGFA International Fishing Tournament was a testament to the beauty and diversity of Samoa’s waters, as well as the passion and dedication of anglers and fishing enthusiasts from around the world. With its inclusivity and diversity, the tournament offered a well-rounded and exciting experience for all involved. As the 2023 SIGFA International Tournament comes to a close, the memories and the friendships forged on this adventure will last a lifetime.
