In the early hours of the morning, the nation’s spirit soared as the streets filled with anticipation and excitement. It started with the customary march to the Malae o Tiafau, Mulinu’u, Apia where schools and various organisations came together to showcase their pride and respect to the momentous occasion. Distinguish guests, including leaders from nearby Pacific nations and members of the parliament soon followed, culminating with the arrival of his Head of State, Afioga Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aleto’a Sualavi II and his Masiofo.
As Samoa is deeply rooted in its faith in God, the morning service was officially started with a spiritual message and the thanksgiving prayer delivered by Area Seventy, Elder Sapele Faalogo Jnr. of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
In his speech, Elder Sapele Fa’alogo beautifully expressed:
“We rejoice in 61 years of Independence. It did not come easy; trials and challenges encountered along the way were many. The price paid was high—the blood, sacrifice, and struggles of our forefathers and leaders, we celebrate their courage and vision. We pay homage to their love for God and country.
As we celebrate these years of Independence, may we, as individuals, as a nation, as a people, lift our sights to lofty goals and show gratitude to our Eternal God for His unfailing, universal, unconditional abiding love. The Savior taught us to love one another, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:35).
May we reflect the Savior’s pure love in our conversations and dealings with each other. Regardless of political affiliations, color, or breed, regardless of our many differences, the ultimate test of our discipleship is the sincerity of our love for God and man. And we show our love for God by loving our fellowmen.
Is it not fitting, then, that in celebrating 61 years of independence, we ought to show forth more love, more patience, and tolerance for each other, including those whose beliefs are different from our own? As we celebrate the great courage and vision of those who went before us, I pray that we will not forget to celebrate, acknowledge, and give thanks also to God, our Eternal Father, whose love and faithfulness have brought us safely to this day.
In the Old Testament, Deuteronomy, Moses exhorted the children of Israel to keep the commandments of God. He urged them to teach them to their children so that their children may be exemplary before all nations.
In the many activities and busy celebrations that follow, may we not forget the love of God in all that we do. May we show that love by being steadfast and unwavering in keeping His commandments and by showing sincere, selfless love for our fellowmen.”
Elder Sapele Fa’alogo’s message emphasised the significance of gratitude, love, unity, and faith in the Samoan people’s journey towards independence. The speech serves as a reminder to honor the sacrifices of their forefathers, embrace love and unity among all, set ambitious goals, and remain steadfast in their faith and adherence to God’s commandments. By embodying these principles, the Samoan people can forge a prosperous future founded on the values of gratitude, love, unity, and faith, ensuring a legacy of strength and progress for generations to come.
