Samoa’s OFC U-19 Women’s Championship 2023 team secures a spot in the semifinals after a hard-fought battle against Tahiti. The match, which ended in a 1-1 draw in regular time, was eventually decided by a penalty shootout in Suva.
Throughout the game, Samoa’s formidable attacking trio of Lilly Dowsing, Whitney Avei, and Sariah Taeaoalii, who had impressed in the group stages, faced a resilient Tahitian defense. Tahiti’s game plan suffered an early setback when Anavai Taaviri was substituted due to injury.
Despite Samoa’s efforts to break through Tahiti’s defense, Taeaoalii found it challenging to produce the final touch, often lacking support from her teammates or being closed down by defenders. However, in the first minute of stoppage time, Taeaoalii finally found the breakthrough, calmly rounding the Tahiti goalkeeper and placing the ball into the net.
As the game progressed, both teams had opportunities to score, with Samoa missing several chances to extend their lead. In the final minutes, Tahiti was awarded a penalty after Krystal Vivish was fouled in the box, and Vivish converted the spot-kick to equalize.
With no further goals in extra time, the match reached the inevitable point of a penalty shootout. After both teams had their attempts saved three times, Samoa’s Grace Taeaoalii stepped up and confidently placed the ball into the corner, securing Samoa’s place in the semifinals.
