In the aftermath of the highly-anticipated reopening of Fagalii Airport after four long years, a cloud of controversy has cast a shadow over what was supposed to be a significant milestone for Samoa’s aviation sector. Questions are now being asked about the quality of the Fagali’i airport’s runway following reports of tyre damage on a Samoa Airways plane during its first landing.
This incident has led to a public debate, pitting government officials against the airlines themselves. With the Minister for Works, Transport, and Infrastructure, Olo Fiti Va’ai standing firmly by the quality and safety of the runway, and airlines such as Samoa Airways and Talofa Airways expressing concern and even refusal to use the airport until safety concerns are addressed, we are left to wonder – who is telling the truth?
Olo Fiti Va’ai, in defense of the Fagalii Airport’s operations, highlighted that the airport has undergone rigorous safety inspections and met all necessary international requirements. Furthermore, the Samoa Airport Authority (S.A.A.) went above and beyond in their refurbishment efforts, including an extension of the runway from 700 to 800 meters, and the resealing of the runway using asphalt.
In contrast, Samoa Airways presented a different narrative. They argue that the damage caused to the aircraft tyres on the first day of operations was due to the poor quality of the tarmac. The Chief Executive Officer of Samoa Airways, Fauoo Fatu Tielu, expressed several concerns voiced by the airline’s pilots, including worries about the runway’s length and environmental distractions. This viewpoint is shared by co-owner of Talofa Airways, Maria Westerland Hunter, who added concerns about visible pieces of gravel on the runway, which pose potential threats to aircraft engines and propellers.
Moreover, Talofa Airways made the significant decision to continue their operations from Faleolo International Airport, thereby refusing to use the newly reopened Fagalii Airport until the runway’s quality is up to standard.
The ongoing controversy surrounding Fagalii Airport’s runway quality highlights the tension between the government’s infrastructure development plans and the operational and safety concerns of the airlines. As it stands, the runway’s quality and safety remain under scrutiny, and only time will tell whose version of the truth will ultimately take flight.
