Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa has etched a mark in the annals of history at the Brigham Young University (BYU), United States, with the institution hosting its inaugural ava ceremony in her honour last Thursday.
The BYU student online news platform, illuminated the events of the day, noting that students and faculty alike participated in the traditional Samoan ‘Ava ceremony to herald her presence on the campus.
Describing the momentous occasion, BYU student Tyler Pasa exclaimed, “The ‘Ava Ceremony was an absolutely breathtaking experience. For many of us Samoans at BYU, it truly was a once-in-a-lifetime encounter. Welcoming the very first female prime minister through such a ceremony was a profound honor.”
Post the ceremony, Prime Minister Fiame addressed the student body at BYU, articulating her deep appreciation for the heartwarming traditional welcome she was met with.
“I am immensely grateful for this honour. The traditional Samoan ‘Ava Ceremony, which extended to encompass the BYU family, its leadership, and the faculty, was a deeply moving experience. To be recognised in such a manner, not only by the Samoan community but also by the esteemed Brigham Young University in, is truly special. Throughout our lives, we all face challenges. But amidst these, we also bear witness to God’s grace, mercy, and benevolence. I am elated to be here amidst you all, my brothers and sisters in Christ,” conveyed Fiame.
She went on to share snippets from her educational journey in New Zealand and how engaging with diverse communities played a pivotal role in molding her worldview. “We hail from different corners of the globe, with unique cultures and backgrounds. Yet, our innate human need for belonging remains universal. It is this interconnectedness that helps us carve pathways to a prosperous future,” shared Fiame.
The interactive session provided students with a platform to delve deeper into her experiences as prime minister.
Reflecting on the event, BYU student Alofaifo Faleono expressed, “Witnessing the strength and achievements of a fellow Samoan in Prime Minister Fiame is truly inspirational. It reinforces my aspirations for advanced studies and bolsters my career ambitions.”
Rounding off her visit, Fiame recounted her experiences at the recent United Nations assembly, where she had addressed the general debate of the 78th annual assembly.
Further, on 27th September, during her visit to Utah, Fiame also held meetings with the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City. Accompanying her was Peseta Noumea Simi, the Chief Executive Officer of Samoa’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
