Speaking with the Irish Independent, Fruean vividly described the severe impacts of climate change on her Pacific community, highlighting the struggles of food scarcity and environmental degradation. The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, championed by a coalition of Pacific nations, seeks to halt the growth of fossil fuel industries and shift towards renewable energy, complementing the Paris Agreement. This initiative has garnered substantial support, including from over 101 Nobel Laureates, the World Health Organisation, the European Parliament, and more than 2,100 civil society organisations. Recently, the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) also joined the campaign, emphasising the urgency of phasing out fossil fuels, which are responsible for over 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
