SATITOA, SAMOA – The government-owned Satitoa Shipyard, now managed under a lease by the Silva Group Samoa, was officially opened on January 18, 2024, a development that should help the region’s economic and infrastructural growth. The inauguration of this key marine project, presided over by Hon. Olo Fiti Afoa Va’ai, Minister of Works, Transport, and Infrastructure Development, signals an exciting new chapter for the area.

Addressing a gathering of government officials, business leaders, and community members, Minister Olo Fiti underscored the project’s importance as a symbol of resilient growth and a catalyst for Samoa’s economic prosperity. The event saw the presence of dignitaries including the Deputy Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, heads of government departments, and representatives from the Silva Group, a key partner in the project.

The minister highlighted the strategic significance of the development in providing job opportunities, supporting local fisheries, and boosting Samoa’s economy. He emphasised how the new facility would benefit not just large shipping companies but also small fishing operations, providing them with a local, affordable option for ship maintenance and repair.

Reflecting on the challenges faced in the past, Minister Olo Fiti recounted the setbacks due to natural disasters like the 2009 Tsunami and Cyclone Evan in 2012, which had severely damaged the infrastructure. However, he praised the resilient spirit of the Samoan people and the government’s efforts in rebuilding and improving the facilities.

The collaboration with the Silva Group was highlighted as a testament to the government’s commitment to public-private partnerships. This collaboration is expected to bring in expertise and efficiency in the management of the new development.

In his speech, the minister cited a passage from the Book of Kings, encouraging perseverance and faith in the face of adversity. This reference served as an inspiration for the project’s completion despite the challenges encountered along the way.

The ceremony concluded with Minister Olo Fiti officially declaring the marine development project open, marking a new chapter in Satitoa’s growth and development. The community expressed its gratitude and optimism for the future, as this development promises to be a cornerstone in Samoa’s journey towards sustainable economic progress.
