The port of Matautu was abuzz with excitement this morning as the Guardian Class Patrol Boat Nafanua III docked, bringing home its 22-member crew after a three-month voyage. The Samoa Police, Prisons & Corrections Services, along with the crew’s families and friends, extended a warm welcome to the seafarers. The joy of reuniting after three months at sea was evident in the smiles and embraces shared on the wharf.
In attendance at this significant event were key figures including Police Commissioner Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo and senior management. Their presence, along with advisors from the Australian Defence Force, underscored the strong bilateral ties between Samoa and Australia.

The spiritual essence of the ceremony was captured by Rev. Siaosi Salesulu, who drew parallels between the crew’s journey and the biblical tale of David, as told in Psalm 104:26. His poignant message paid tribute to the crew’s dedication and also acknowledged the unwavering faith and prayers of their families.
Adding a governmental perspective, Honourable Deputy Prime Minister Tuala Iosefo Ponifasio conveyed the Samoan Government’s gratitude to the Australian Government and its Defence Force for gifting the patrol boat. He emphasised its significance not just as a valuable asset, but as a vital component in bolstering the maritime security of Samoa and the broader Blue Pacific region.
Captain Inspector Maioa Amosa, representing the crew, spoke of the diverse experience within their ranks, highlighting the blend of seasoned and first-time sailors who navigated the vessel from Australia to Samoa.
The ceremony concluded with the Samoa Police warmly welcoming the crew of the Nafanua III back home. The arrival of the patrol boat, a gift from the Australian Government, is a testament to the collaborative efforts between Samoa and Australia in maintaining maritime security in the Pacific.
