As Samoa prepares to commemorate its 62nd Independence Day on June 1, 2024, a play depicting a historically significant period will be premiered at the Art and Culture Centre for Samoa Theater in Malifa, Apia.

Authored and directed by Pulotu, “The Mau and the Visitor” transports audiences back to the 1920s, delving into the complexities of love, loyalty, and colonial resistance. At its heart is the story of Sinalei, a young woman torn between her affection for Richard Wallace, a New Zealand military police officer, and her unwavering allegiance to her family and country. Against the backdrop of Samoa’s struggle for independence, Sinalei’s journey unfolds, revealing the intricacies of personal and political turmoil.

The title of the play holds symbolic significance, with “Mau” representing “opinion” or “testimony” in Samoan. It harkens back to the Mau movement that emerged in 1908, initially as a dispute over a copra business with the German colonial administration. Over time, the Mau movement evolved into a formidable force advocating for Samoa’s sovereignty against the colonial rule imposed by New Zealand.

While the play has previously been staged in theaters in New Zealand and Australia, its upcoming premiere in Samoa marks a momentous occasion. Scheduled to coincide with the nation’s Independence Day celebrations, it serves as a powerful reminder of Samoa’s journey towards self-determination.

The production of “The Mau and the Visitor” has been made possible through the generous support of its sponsors. Leading the initiative are PPAV Inc and Vodafone Samoa, whose contributions have been instrumental in bringing this compelling narrative to the stage. Additional support from sponsors such as CTV Media, LUCKY Foodtown Apia, MOATOGA Hotel, SINA World Travel, MOATOGA Upholstery & Furniture, and MATNIUEL Screen Printing & Signs all come together to bring such a historical moment to life in Samoa.
