Launch of Samoa Ne’i Galo Vol 11: preserving Samoan oral traditions

The Samoa Ne’i Galo Vol 11, a compilation of legends and myths spanning from 1972 to the present, was officially launched recently. This collection, curated through the Samoa Ne’i Galo project, showcases the dedication and artistry of Samoan educators who have diligently preserved the nation’s oral traditions.

During the launch event, Seuula Ioane Tuā’au, Minister of Education and Culture, emphasied the importance of preserving Samoa’s cultural heritage. “This upgrade not only enhances the exhibition space but also ensures that the legacy of our teachers’ contributions are preserved and presented in a manner befitting its significance,” remarked Minister Tuā’au.

Acknowledgments were extended to key figures who have played pivotal roles in the preservation of Samoan culture. Among them, the late Mata’afa Elia Autagavaia, whose contributions continue to resonate within the cultural landscape. Afioga Galumalemana Alfred Hunkin, distinguished as a former member of the Samoan Translation and Conservation Group (STCG), a linguist, musician, and former teacher and lecturer at the National University of Samoa (NUS), was recognised for his multifaceted involvement in promoting Samoan heritage.

Ms. Karene Faasisila, current committee member of STCG and owner of photo collections spanning from 2005 to 2016, was acknowledged for her significant contributions to preserving visual records of Samoan culture. Mr. John Ruffell, Director of Kiwi Pacific Records International Ltd. (NZ), was lauded for his efforts in documenting and disseminating Samoan music and cultural expressions globally.

Mr. Dillon Misa, the creative mind behind Le Faleo’o and Kilegi Ivatasi YouTube Channels, was recognised for his innovative approach to sharing Samoan cultural content through digital platforms.

Their dedication and expertise have greatly contributed to the success of the project, ensuring that the rich tapestry of Samoan oral traditions remains accessible and cherished for generations to come.
