A recent report by the Samoa Observer has revealed that the Samoa Cabinet has granted approval for the public in Samoa to utilise Starlink Sat services.
In an interview with Soalepule, La’auli shared the government’s commitment to improving internet services in Samoa, highlighting the necessity for reliable connectivity and lower internet costs.
This decision follows a cease order issued by the Regulator in January, aiming to halt unauthorised usage of Starlink equipment in Samoa, citing violations of the Telecommunications Radio Equipment Technical Standards and Type Approval Rules 2018.
Now that the Cabinet endorses Starlink, the cease notice issued by the regulator has been revoked.
According to Starlink’s web order services, residents of Apia, Samoa, can now place orders to reserve their Starlink connections. Starlink is set to commence coverage in Samoa starting in 2025, pending regulatory approval. Orders within each coverage area will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Equipment will be imported from New Zealand for use in Samoa, ensuring compatibility and functionality comparable to that in New Zealand.
Prospective users have the option to rent Starlink devices and hardware for NZ$19 per month, in addition to a standard internet connection fee of NZ$159 per month. Alternatively, devices can be purchased for NZ$399 (new) or NZ$199 (used), with additional costs for other components.
The affordability of Starlink services presents a notable advantage over existing ISPs in Samoa, offering unlimited internet access for a fixed monthly fee.
With the government’s endorsement, opportunities are now available for businesses in Samoa to adopt Starlink services.
