Sydney, Australia – The Bondi Junction Westfield Mall is currently closed as a detailed investigation unfolds into a stabbing spree that left six dead, including the mother of an injured infant.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb has described the crime scene as “expansive,” with the investigative efforts expected to span multiple days. A key focus includes facilitating the removal of vehicles stranded at the mall, scheduled for Sunday.

The sequence of events, as outlined by police, begins with the assailant entering the mall at 3.10 pm, briefly leaving, and then returning around 3.20 pm.

Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke reported that the individual engaged with nine people, inflicting injuries believed to be stab wounds with a carried weapon.

A senior police officer, who, upon hearing of the attack, rushed into the mall. Guided by bystanders, she located the assailant on the fifth level. When confronted, the attacker brandished a knife, leading to the officer taking decisive action to neutralise the threat.

Authorities have identified the perpetrator as a 40-year-old man known to law enforcement, clarifying that there’s currently no evidence to suggest a terrorism link. The formal identification process of the attacker and the investigation into his background and motives are ongoing.

The attack resulted in the immediate deaths of four women and one man, with a sixth fatality occurring in the hospital. Among the injured is a 9-month-old infant, now undergoing surgery; the condition of the infant remains closely monitored.

Commissioner Webb reassured the public of no further risk, attributing the incident to a single individual who is now deceased.

In response to this tragedy, NSW Police, supported by the Australian Federal Police, are spearheading a rigorous investigation, underscored by a substantial emergency response, including the deployment of 40 NSW Ambulance resources.

This event has prompted discussions at the highest levels, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese engaging with leaders from the Australian Federal Police and ASIO, emphasising a unified effort in understanding and addressing the circumstances of the attack.

The community is urged to refrain from speculation, as authorities work diligently to provide clarity and ensure public safety through a “lengthy and precise” investigation.
