The Samoa Farmers Association (SFA), established in 2010, has been a cornerstone for supporting rural and low-income farmers in Samoa. By connecting farmers to markets and promoting sustainable agricultural practices, the SFA has made significant strides in enhancing the livelihoods of its members. In 2021, the association welcomed I’umalo Clayton Simamao as its Youth Representative, a role through which he brought a fresh, innovative perspective aimed at tackling some of the persistent challenges faced by the farmers.

I’umalo’s engagement with the community and his understanding of their needs were deepened by insights from a prior project that identified lack of access to water and electricity as primary concerns among farmers. Drawing on his experience in Samoa’s agriculture sector, he proposed the use of solar-powered generators to the SFA board as a solution to these issues. This initiative was envisioned to provide a sustainable and reliable source of energy to the farmers, particularly benefiting those in remote areas.

With the enthusiastic backing of the SFA board, I’umalo secured funding from the Australian High Commission to procure and distribute solar generators. The implementation of these generators has had a transformative impact on the farming community:

  • Enhanced Communication and Operational Efficiency: The availability of power has kept farmers connected, allowing for swift coordination and enabling them to meet market demands efficiently. Farmers can now keep their phones charged, which is crucial for receiving and processing orders promptly.
  • Safety and Accessibility Improvements: Farmers who previously made long and hazardous trips to charge their phones, or to operate basic machinery, now enjoy the safety and convenience of onsite power. This is especially significant for those whose farms are located in mountainous regions.
  • Boost in Morale and Community Spirit: The initiative has also fostered a stronger community spirit and boosted morale among the farmers and their staff. The reduced isolation due to improved communication facilities has enhanced productivity and job satisfaction within the farming communities.
  • Cultural and Recreational Benefits: The availability of power has allowed for small quality-of-life improvements, such as the ability for one farmer to bring a TV to his remote farm, providing entertainment for the workers and enhancing their living conditions on-site.

This initiative has not only solved practical problems but also opened up new perspectives among the farmers regarding the benefits of renewable energy, leading to a broader acceptance and interest in sustainable practices. Looking to the future, I’umalo and the SFA are exploring additional innovative technologies and funding opportunities to further enhance agricultural productivity and resilience.

The journey of the Samoa Farmers Association in adopting renewable energy stands as a testament to the power of community-driven innovation and the effectiveness of locally led development initiatives. Through the dedication and vision of leaders like I’umalo Clayton Simamao, the SFA is paving the way towards a more sustainable and prosperous future for Samoa’s farmers.
