Disney fans have been eagerly awaiting the sequel to Moana, and the anticipation reached a fever pitch with the release of the trailer. The trailer for Moana 2 has made quite the splash, breaking the record for Disney’s most-watched animated trailer in its first day of release.
The teaser for this highly-anticipated sequel dropped on Wednesday and amassed over 178 million views in its first 24 hours.
Views came from across social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X, and YouTube.
Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson return as Moana and Maui for the sequel, which takes place three years after Moana’s initial adventure and follows her on a quest to find “people beyond the shores of Motonui.”
“This is a call from the ancestors,” she says in the trailer.
“To sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean.”
Reacting to the record-breaking news, Cravalho wrote in a post to Instagram: “Mahalo nui loa Moana ‘ohana!! You’ve made #Moana2 THEE most watched trailer in @disneyanimation history!!! November 27th can’t come soon enough.” The sequel was announced earlier this year by Disney chief executive Bob Iger.
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”
A live-action adaptation of the 2016 film is in the works, with Johnson set to reprise “the role of a lifetime” as Maui.
Moana was nominated for two Oscars in 2017: Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song.
Moana 2 sails into theatres on 27 November.
