President Joe Biden has stated that he will not use his presidential authority to reduce the eventual sentence his son, Hunter Biden, faces for his federal felony conviction on gun charges.

Following a news conference at the Group of Seven summit on Thursday, Biden was asked if he intended to commute his son’s sentence. He responded that he would not.

Hunter Biden’s sentencing date has yet to be determined. The three counts he faces carry a maximum sentence of up to 25 years in prison, though such a lengthy sentence is improbable for a first-time offender.

The final decision on Hunter Biden’s sentence will be made by US District Judge Maryellen Noreika, who was appointed by former Republican President Donald Trump. She will determine the duration of his imprisonment, if any.

Biden’s statement came a day after the White House refrained from ruling out a potential commutation for Hunter Biden. However, both the President and the White House have consistently stated for months that Biden would not pardon his son.

During Thursday’s news conference, President Biden expressed his pride in his son, Hunter, for overcoming addiction and praised him as one of the brightest and most decent men he knows.

“I abide by the jury’s decision. I will do that and I will not pardon him,” Biden affirmed.

Typically, a US presidential candidate’s child being convicted of a felony crime in the run-up to an election would significantly harm the campaign’s chances. However, in the unusual context of the 2024 election, Hunter Biden’s convictions might have the opposite effect.

By accepting the jury’s decision and the court’s ruling, Joe Biden immediately reaffirmed his respect for the US justice system and the rule of law, setting a clear contrast with his opponent’s attitude.
