The Cabinet has officially appointed Pouli Dr. Keneti Faulalo as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Samoa Export Authority, an important step in the government’s initiative to bolster Samoa’s export sector.
Dr. Faulalo was selected from a pool of three candidates interviewed for the position. A distinguished alumnus of Samoa College (1980), Dr. Faulalo furthered his education at New Plymouth Boys’ High School and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science with Honors from the University of Canterbury. He hails from the ‘Aiga Sā-Matiū in Utuali’i village and brings over two decades of experience in international development, focusing on sustainable development issues faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
As an international consultant, Dr. Faulalo has served as a Senior Technical Adviser for United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) projects across the Pacific, specializing in sustainable agriculture, value chains, and food system transformation. Prior to his consulting career, he spent a decade within the United Nations system, working as a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Officer in the Pacific and later as an Inter-regional Advisor at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) in New York, focusing on SIDS issues, water, and climate change adaptation.
Dr. Faulalo also has significant experience with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (NZ MFAT), where he managed Pacific regional and multilateral environment programs. His academic credentials include a tenure as a lecturer at the National University of Samoa and a Post-doctoral Research Fellowship at the School of Agriculture for the University of the South Pacific.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Faulalo contributes to the community through his voluntary roles on the Executive Boards of the Samoa Cancer Society and the Sosaiete Fa’asao o Samoa/Samoa Conservation Society. He is also the Chair of the interim Board of Live&Learn Environmental Education (LLEE-Samoa), a new non-governmental organization.
The establishment of the Samoa Export Authority, under the Ministry of Public Enterprises, is a key component of the government’s manifesto. Initially focusing on agricultural products, the Authority aims to oversee and enhance all of Samoa’s export activities in the long term.
Dr. Faulalo’s appointment as CEO is set for a three-year term, during which he will lead efforts to strengthen Samoa’s export capabilities and promote sustainable development.
