The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) and Blue Orca New Zealand have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to initiate their partnership in collecting and exporting of electronic waste out of Samoa. The MOU sets forth the terms and understanding between the Parties with regard to the implementation of the “Environmental Takeback Programme” project in Samoa.
This Agreement helps to promote environmental sustainability by providing a mechanism for safe disposal and recycling of electronic waste (e-waste). E-waste, which includes discarded electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, and televisions, often contains hazardous materials that can harm the environment if not disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. This arrangement aims to mitigate these risks by offering individuals and organisations a responsible way to recycle their electronic devices.
“Electronic waste has become one of Samoa’s highest generated bulky waste with very limited options for recovery and management available in country. The MOU we sign today embarks us on a promising five-year journey. The Ministry aims to synergize with other waste management initiatives for greater impact”, said Lealaisalanoa Frances Brown Reupena.
The MNRE through its Waste Management and Pollution Control Division (WMPCD), leads and fosters partnerships and collaboration with private sector entities and local communities to expand their eco-consciousness and environmental outcomes under the MOU. Samsung is the Project Sponsor and are proud Champions in pioneering the manufacturer responsibility of e-waste in the Pacific.
This agreement will cover all E-Waste types and brands including Samsung E-waste and with the support of Blue Orca and relevant partners will be responsible for all shipping and exportation out of the country. Through the program, the public can bring their old or unwanted electronics to designated collection points where they are pre-packaged for exportation to overseas recycling markets.
This helps prevent the release of harmful substances into the environment and promotes the reuse of valuable materials found in electronic devices. This project as a whole supports the goals of sustainability, pollution prevention, and resource conservation, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment for present and future generations.
The Ministry acknowledges the assistance of Blue Orca NZ Ltd, Samsung Electronics New Zealand and their local counterparts SSAB and the Samoa Tokelau Association of Recyclers (STAR) who have all expressed their willingness to support Samoa in managing E-waste for the next five (5) years.
