Modern medical technology and equipment are essential resources for the government to ensure that all Samoans have equal access to safe and high-quality healthcare for the future well-being of its people.
his weekend, the Government of Japan handed over a mobile dental clinic to Samoa. This is the second mobile clinic purchased by Japan to aid in the treatment and prevention of dental diseases among the people of Samoa.
The total cost of this vehicle, fully equipped with modern technology for dental services, is $2.4 million. In a statement, the Minister of Health, Valasi Luapitoifanua Tafito Selesele, noted that this vehicle will be used to provide dental services, particularly in rural areas.
“This project has been in the planning stages since 2003, with the aim of improving Health Services, including dental care and oral health for the people. In 2021, the government confirmed Japan’s support in purchasing this fully equipped bus with modern technology for the dental treatment of Samoan schoolchildren and other residents in rural areas.”
A major challenge in recent years for dental services has been the lack of a stable facility to carry out these services. The Minister’s long-term goal is to establish a dental hospital to provide safe services for the general public.
“The ultimate goal and vision are to build a new Dental Hospital Building for Samoa, and we believe this dream can be realised as discussions have already begun regarding the construction of a new government dental hospital.”
The Dental Hospital Management had been seeking ways to acquire another vehicle to continue providing services for schoolchildren, leading to another request being made to the Ministry of Finance through the Ministry of Health. The Minister expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan for their continued support in developing Samoa, particularly through the assistance provided for the well-being of Samoans.
“The strong and effective partnership between the two governments will undoubtedly continue for the benefit of the Samoan people in the future.”
Valasi also mentioned that both vehicles will be used by the Ministry in preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which Samoa will host in October. During the handover of the vehicle, Japan’s Ambassador to Samoa, Mr. Keisuke Senta, stated that this assistance is a visible representation of the collaboration between the two governments, working together for the betterment of Samoa in the days to come.
