Apia, 23 September 2024 – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) of Samoa has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Newcastle, Australia, to collaborate on renewable energy research and capacity development. The agreement was formalized during a ceremony at the Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi (TATTE) Building.

The MOU aims to strengthen scientific and technical cooperation between Samoa and Australia, focusing on renewable energy and sustainable resource management. It includes provisions for joint research, training programs, and the development of educational materials. The partnership is expected to support Samoa’s efforts to transition to renewable energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

MNRE CEO Lealaisalanoa Frances Brown Reupena said the agreement marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to tackle environmental challenges. “By combining our resources and expertise, we will address critical environmental challenges, improve capacity in both countries, and develop solutions that can make a real difference,” she said.

The partnership will also include opportunities for MNRE staff to undertake master’s and PhD programs through joint Australian-Samoan initiatives. Professor Zee Upton, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Newcastle, highlighted the significance of the collaboration. “Our joint efforts will contribute to addressing global energy challenges, particularly for small island nations that face disproportionate risks from climate change,” she said.

The MOU outlines areas of cooperation, including the exchange of scientific information, research design, and the implementation of pilot projects. MNRE expressed appreciation for the University of Newcastle’s leadership, particularly that of Professor Alan Broadfoot, in advancing the partnership.
