Samoa marked the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China with an event held at Vailima on Tuesday evening, attended by government officials, diplomats, and invited guests.
Acting Prime Minister, Honourable Matamua Seumanu Vasati Sili Pulufana, delivered the keynote speech, extending congratulations on behalf of the Government and people of Samoa. “We extend our warmest congratulations to the Government of the People’s Republic of China on reaching this significant milestone,” she said.
Reflecting on nearly five decades of bilateral relations, which began in 1975, she emphasized the importance of the long-standing partnership based on trust and mutual respect. “Our relationship has progressed from strength to strength through historical connections, robust people-to-people exchanges, and meaningful cooperation in various areas.”
The Acting Prime Minister also acknowledged China’s contributions to Samoa’s development. “China continues to assist Samoa in meeting its needs through various projects in the form of grants by way of economic infrastructure, human resource development, health, education, tourism, and most importantly the agricultural sector.”
Among the highlights of the partnership, she mentioned the opening of the Police Academy at Tafaigata, a project showcasing the ongoing cooperation between the two countries in enhancing security measures. “The recent opening of the Police academy at Tafaigata with the fingerprinting examination laboratory shows commitment in enhancing security,” she said.
Matamua also noted the increasing number of Samoan students pursuing tertiary education in China, with 23 nationals recently departing for studies. “Our public service and private sector also continue to benefit from training courses and seminars offered in China, in various technical and specialized fields.”
The evening concluded with a toast proposed by Matamua, recognizing the enduring partnership between Samoa and China. “To the continued success and prosperity of the Government and People of China and to the lasting friendship between our two countries.”
The event was attended by key officials, including His Highness Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II, Ministers of Cabinet, the Chief Justice, Members of Parliament, and Ambassador of China, Fei Mingxing.
