The Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa hosted a validation workshop on October 2, 2024, to finalize the National Science, Technology & Innovation (ST&I) Policy. The event brought together stakeholders from various sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, and technology, to review and ensure the policy addresses Samoa’s scientific challenges.

In his keynote address, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Laauli Leuatea Polataivao Fosi, highlighted the importance of collaboration, stating, “Science, technology, and innovation thrive on diverse viewpoints. Each of you brings unique insights and experiences that are vital to finalizing a policy that truly serves our collective interests.”

The policy, still in its draft form, aims to address key scientific and technological developments in Samoa, including advancements in artificial intelligence, climate resilience, and food security. The Minister emphasized that validation is a critical part of the process, explaining, “Validation is not merely an exercise in approval; it is an opportunity for critical reflection and constructive dialogue.”

UNESCO’s role in supporting the policy development was also acknowledged, with the Minister thanking the organization for its funding and support, which has been “instrumental in the development of this Science, Technology, and Innovation policy.”

Participants were encouraged to share their expertise to ensure the policy is effective and reflects the needs of the Samoan scientific community. Hon. Laauli concluded by expressing his gratitude for the commitment shown by the stakeholders, noting that the policy will have a “lasting impact in promoting science, technology, and innovation in Samoa.”
