Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has cast his ballot in the 2024 election, voting by mail, the Carter Center confirmed. This comes just weeks after he celebrated his 100th birthday on October 1, from his home in Plains, Georgia, where he’s been receiving hospice care.

According to his son, Chip Carter, the election was very much on his father’s mind. “He’s still engaged,” Chip said, sharing a touching moment from two months earlier when he asked his father if he was aiming to live to 100. Jimmy Carter responded, “No, I’m trying to live to vote for Kamala Harris.”

While the Carter Center did not provide further details, Georgia voters have been turning out in record numbers since early voting began. According to state election rules, Carter’s vote will still be counted even if he is no longer alive by Election Day, November 5. Georgia law recognizes a mailed ballot as valid once it is received by local election officials.
