A turning point in the Gaza war?

The killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar by Israeli forces was described by U.S. President Joe Biden as a positive development for Israel, the U.S., and the world. He said it could create an opening for securing the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and may help end the conflict in Gaza.

Biden compared Sinwar’s death to the U.S. mission that killed Osama bin Laden, reinforcing the message that those responsible for attacks, such as the 7 October 2023 assault on Israel, will face consequences.

The president also plans to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other leaders about the next steps for returning hostages and ending the war. He stated that Sinwar’s death could lead to a future for Gaza without Hamas in power, providing an opportunity for a political resolution that benefits both Israelis and Palestinians.

While Biden praised U.S. intelligence and special operations forces for their support, it was clarified that the operation was led by Israeli forces. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan called Sinwar a major barrier to peace, expressing hope that his death could help advance the release of hostages and efforts toward peace.
