According to a recent Facebook post by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries – Samoa, a traditional ava ceremony was held to welcome Sir Dr. Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), to Samoa. He was accompanied by Xiangjun Yao and other members of the FAO delegation.

The welcoming ceremony at Samoa Tourism’s Fale Samoa on 7 November 2024 brought together members of the FAO delegation, alongside the Minister of Health and the CEO of Agriculture and Fisheries, to discuss collaborative efforts in agriculture and food security.

Dr. Qu Dongyu, who took office as FAO’s Director-General in 2019, has an extensive background in agriculture, food security, and rural development. Previously serving as China’s Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, he is known for advancing sustainable agriculture and promoting digital innovation in food systems. His leadership at FAO focuses on supporting countries in their efforts to tackle hunger and improve resilience against climate change.

During his tenure, Dr. Qu has emphasised the importance of adapting agricultural practices to climate challenges and harnessing technology to enhance food security. His visit to Samoa demonstrates FAO’s commitment to strengthening partnerships in the Pacific region, addressing the unique vulnerabilities island nations face with climate change and food sustainability.

FAO has been active in Samoa through various initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices, improving food security, and building resilience against climate impacts. Dr. Qu’s discussions with local leaders are expected to explore further cooperation in these areas, with a focus on initiatives that can directly benefit rural communities.

Following the welcoming ceremony, Dr. Qu and his team will meet with government officials and stakeholders to explore ways to enhance Samoa’s agricultural sector and develop sustainable solutions for food production.
