The Samoa Police, Prisons, and Corrections Services honoured the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) on Thursday during a commendation presentation at the Police Maritime Wing in Matautu. The event acknowledged NZDF’s contributions during the search and rescue operation for the HMNZS Marawanui crew on 5 October 2024.

Minister of Police, Prisons, and Corrections Services, Hon. Faualo Harry Jeffrey Schuster, expressed gratitude for NZDF’s support.

“Today, we recognise the dedication and resilience of all involved in the rescue operation. Your commitment ensured the safe return of all crew members despite challenging weather conditions,” said the Minister.

The event highlighted the collaboration between Samoa’s Police Maritime Wing, the Australian Defence Force (ADF), and the NZDF.

“This occasion underscores the strong partnerships we have built to enhance maritime safety and security in our Blue Pacific,” the Minister added.

Acting Commissioner Lafaitele Herbert Aati joined the ceremony, which was attended by NZ Chief of Defence Force Air Vice Marshal Tony Davies, Deputy Chief Commodore Andrew Brown, and representatives from both the NZDF and ADF.

The Minister acknowledged the ongoing support from the ADF. “Their assistance remains a pillar of strength for our Police Maritime Wing,” he said.

The rescue operation demonstrated coordinated efforts between the shore teams, small boats, and the crew of the Nafanua III, according to the Minister. “The resilience displayed by everyone involved reflects their dedication to their calling and the strong leadership guiding them.”

The event concluded with a commitment to further strengthen partnerships between Samoa and New Zealand to ensure maritime security in the Pacific. “We look forward to continued collaboration with the NZDF to safeguard our shared waters,” the Minister said.
