A symposium addressing the sugary drink epidemic will bring together leading global experts, including the University of Auckland’s Dame Teuila Percival, on 22 November at the Fale Pasifika.
The symposium will spotlight those leading the charge for a sugary-drink-free Aotearoa New Zealand, diagnose the issue, and present constructive solutions to the epidemic.
Keynote speakers include:
- Professor Richard Johnson (University of Colorado), author of The Sugar Fix, exploring sugar’s link to obesity and metabolic diseases.
- Honorary Associate Professor Dame Teuila Percival, a pioneer in Pacific children’s health, advocating for healthier futures.
- Professor Robert Lustig (University of California, San Francisco), a prominent endocrinologist focusing on sugar’s role in childhood obesity and diabetes.
A decade after the inaugural FIZZ Symposium in 2014, this event will reflect on ten years of efforts to reduce sugary beverage consumption, analyze barriers, and outline next steps for a sugary-drink-free NZ.
The discussion will emphasize the health impacts of sugary drinks, including obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gout, and dental issues. Attendees will engage in keynotes, panels, and discussions to explore how policy, education, and advocacy can drive meaningful change.
The panel will include academics, public health advocates, and industry representatives, ensuring a diverse and impactful dialogue.
