Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa has dismissed three Cabinet Ministers following individual meetings earlier today, signaling tensions within the FAST government.

The Ministers removed are Hon. Leota Laki Lamositele, Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Labour; Hon. Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molio’o, Minister of Women, Community, and Social Development, representing Palauli No. 1; and Hon. Toelupe Poumulinuku Onesemo, Minister of Communication and Information Technology, representing Falealili No. 1. Their dismissal is linked to a letter they signed requesting the Prime Minister step down from her role.

During a Facebook live at 11:41 pm on Monday, 13 January 2025, Former Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and FAST Party Chairperson Laaulialemalietoa Polataivao Fosi Schmidt addressed his own removal during a Facebook live broadcast. He stated that while he accepts the decision, he will continue serving as a Member of Parliament and Chair of the FAST Party.

A FAST Party meeting held at Mulinuu today was attended by only 18 of the 35 district representatives. The Prime Minister and several Cabinet Ministers were notably absent. Speaking on the turnout, La’auli remarked, “ia ona e lē ma-iloa po’o le a le mafuaaga.”

La’auli’s previous dismissal from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries followed charges filed against him by police, including conspiracy, fabricating evidence, and harassment via electronic means.

The recent dismissals and low attendance at the FAST meeting reflect internal challenges as the party navigates questions of leadership and unity.
