Illegal sale of frequency-emitting electronics under investigation in Samoa

The Office of the Regulator has issued a warning to businesses selling electronic devices that emit or receive frequency signals without proper authorisation. This includes items such as mobile phones, walkie-talkies, drones, and other devices requiring type approval under Samoa’s Type Approval Rules 2018.

Type approval ensures these devices meet international and local standards for safety, health, and technical reliability. The Regulator indicated that selling such equipment without approval violates the Telecommunication Act 2005 and may lead to fines or business closure.

The approval process is necessary to prevent frequency interference and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Businesses are urged to submit the required documentation to the Office of the Regulator to avoid legal consequences.

Any inquiries can be directed to their office via phone at +685 30282 or email at [email protected].
