Argentina follows U.S. lead, plans WHO exit

Argentina has announced its decision to leave the World Health Organization (WHO), citing disagreements over global health policies and concerns over national sovereignty. The move follows the recent executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump to pull the United States out of the global health organization.

Presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni confirmed the decision, stating that Argentina will not allow an international organization to dictate its health policies.

“We do not accept that a foreign body should decide how Argentina handles its health matters,” Adorni said.

He highlighted the WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as a major factor behind the withdrawal, pointing to the organisation’s endorsement of extended lockdowns, which Adorni described as having harmed Argentina’s economy under the previous administration.

President Javier Milei has consistently criticized the WHO for its pandemic measures and influence on domestic policy, emphasizing his administration’s intent to prioritize national sovereignty. The decision reflects Argentina’s shift toward distancing itself from global institutions and strengthening ties with countries such as the United States and Israel.

The process of leaving the WHO is expected to take about a year after formal notification. Unlike some nations, Argentina does not depend on WHO funding for its health programs, and officials have assured that the withdrawal will not disrupt the country’s healthcare system. Instead, the government argues that the move will allow greater flexibility in designing health policies tailored to Argentina’s needs.

Critics, including opposition figures and public health experts, have warned that the decision may reduce Argentina’s access to global health data, resources, and coordinated responses to pandemics. Additionally, some have questioned whether the president can make such a significant decision unilaterally, suggesting the possibility of legal challenges.

While the government maintains that the withdrawal will not negatively impact healthcare services, the long-term effects of leaving the WHO remain uncertain.
