Cruiserweight boxing champion Jai Opetaia is reconnecting with his roots in Samoa before heading back overseas. He is in the country with his mother, partner, and their baby, making it a special trip for his family, who are experiencing Samoa for the first time.

On Monday, Opetaia met with local media at a press conference facilitated by the Samoa Tourism Authority, in collaboration with Niumedia and Sleeping Giant Films, at the Samoa Tourism Fale. He shared that his visit is about giving back to the Samoan community, enjoying the islands, and inspiring young people.

While he isn’t engaging in intense training, Opetaia is open to basic boxing sessions. He has been visiting schools and organizations, sharing his journey to show young people that success comes from hard work. “The kids have the world at their feet,” he said, hoping to motivate them by showing that someone like him, with Samoan roots, can reach international success.

Following the press conference, Opetaia visited Marist Brothers Primary School, where he led a light training session. “It’s all about fun, showing these kids that I’m just like them—another human trying my best,” he said. He also visited Chanel College and the Seventh Day Adventist School, and this morning, he spent time with Samoa Victim Support Group.

Opetaia remains undefeated in 27 professional fights, with 21 wins by knockout. His most recent bout was against New Zealand’s David Nyika.
