The Samoa Bureau of Statistics (SBS) has launched the Samoa Stats Portal, a centralised online platform providing public access to official statistics. The launch took place on Friday, 21 March 2025, at Sheraton Aggie Grey’s Hotel in Apia.
The portal currently hosts datasets across five areas: national accounts, consumer price index, government finance, international trade, and employment. More datasets will be added over time.
The project was funded by the Asian Development Bank, with technical support from the Pacific Community and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). It was completed over a seven-month period.
Government Statistician and SBS CEO Leota Aliielua Salani said the portal aims to improve how statistical data is accessed and used across sectors.
“This portal ensures policymakers, businesses, researchers, and the public have easy access to reliable and timely data, empowering informed choices that drive Samoa’s development forward,” he said.
He also noted the platform brings Samoa into alignment with international systems.
“With the introduction of this new data portal, Samoa Bureau of Statistics has entered a global community of .Stat users and SDMX experts, and part of international best practice.”
He stressed the need for continuous updates and collaboration.
“Launching this platform is only the beginning. Sustainability is key.”
SBS Assistant CEO for ICT and State Processing, Laulu Sialafua Lova, introduced the portal’s features and encouraged users to explore the site. He said the platform is designed to be accessible for researchers, developers, and the general public.
ADB Senior Statistician Stefan Schipper described the portal as a starting point for broader improvements in how Samoa shares official data.
