Historic Partnership Between Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (SFESA) and Fiji’s National Fire Authority (NFA) to Strengthen Pacific Emergency Response

Suva, Fiji – Marking a major milestone for regional cooperation and resilience, the Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (SFESA) and the National Fire Authority (NFA) of Fiji have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance fire safety and emergency response capabilities across the Pacific.

The signing ceremony, held in Navua Station, marks the beginning of a powerful partnership aimed at boosting disaster preparedness, improving frontline coordination, and advancing public safety throughout the region.

“This MOU represents more than a formal agreement — it is a shared vision for a safer, more resilient Pacific,” said Commissioner Tanuvasa Oloapu Petone Mauga of SFESA. “Through collaboration, training, and mutual support, we can strengthen our collective ability to respond to the evolving risks facing our communities.”

The MOU outlines key areas of cooperation, including:

I. Joint Training and Personnel Exchanges:
By sharing knowledge and expertise, both agencies will bolster their operational readiness and responsiveness.

II. Collaborative Fire Prevention and Community Education:
Together, SFESA and NFA will promote fire safety and educate the public/community on best practices to reduce fire risks.

III. Modern Firefighting Technologies:
The partnership will focus on adopting cutting-edge firefighting tools and techniques to improve operational efficiency.

IV. Coordinated Disaster Response:
In times of crisis, both agencies will work hand-in-hand to respond swiftly and effectively to disasters and large-scale emergencies.

Following the formalities, the SFESA delegation explored key NFA facilities, beginning with Lami Fire Station. They were greeted with a ceremonial parade, providing them with a deeper understanding of Fiji’s firefighting operations and the dedication of its personnel. The tour provided an in-depth overview of the station’s operations and highlighted the dedication of Fiji’s firefighters.

The tour continued to the Suva Fire Station and NFA Headquarters, where they observed national emergency coordination at the National Command Centre and received operational briefings. These engagements provided valuable insights into Fiji’s emergency response infrastructure and reinforced the importance of regional learning and exchange.

SFESA extends heartfelt thanks to the leadership and personnel of NFA Fiji for their warm hospitality, and to PIEMA for their invaluable support in making this milestone partnership a reality.

The Commissioner also acknowledges the vital support from PIEMA and the Pacific Community (SPC), whose contributions have made this partnership possible — strengthening regional ties in building a more resilient Pacific.
