A high-profile case involving former Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, La’auli Leuatea Schmidt, and several others continues at the Supreme Court of Samoa. The case, described by many as one of the most anticipated trials in the nation’s recent history, has drawn significant public attention.
Defendants include La’auli, former Associate Minister of Police, Prisons & Corrections Services Fepulea’i Faimata Su’a, former Police Inspector Fa’ataumalama Li’o Au’ava, Lise Marie Schmidt, Samuelu Le’au, and Sivai Kepi Mamea. They face charges of conspiracy to divert the course of justice and conspiracy to commit an offence, stemming from accusations surrounding the 2021 hit-and-run incident involving MP Leala’ilepule Rimoni Aiafi and the death of teenager Tu’uau Maletino.
In court, Police Commissioner Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo provided testimony and presented evidence, including video material, which reportedly supported the prosecution’s case. According to sources present during the proceedings, the Commissioner’s testimony prompted further questions from the Judge regarding the role of the TV program Tautai A’e, which was previously mentioned in connection with the case. Commissioner Auapa’au confirmed that steps were being taken to extradite those involved with the program.
MP Leala’ilepule has consistently denied any involvement, stating in earlier interviews that investigations by police did not substantiate the allegations against him. He expressed confidence in the judicial process, highlighting his previous complaint to the police following televised statements that named him.
The trial is ongoing, with the next hearing scheduled for today.
