Moataa Rugby Club, one of the oldest rugby clubs in Samoa, has announced its plans to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Club President and Member of Parliament for Vaimauga No.2 district, Hon. Lenata’i Victor Tamapua, described the milestone as a dream come true, saying the village has been preparing and looking forward to this major event.
“Reflecting on the development of rugby in our village, this milestone has to be celebrated,” said Lenata’i.

The week-long celebration will begin this Sunday with a thanksgiving service at the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa (CCCS) in Moataa. A parade through Apia is scheduled for Tuesday, with the club inviting any other clubs to join the march, which will start from Matagialalua in front of the government building.
The highlight of the week will be a rugby tournament held on Friday and Saturday at the Moataa village rugby field. The tournament will feature 24 local teams and two overseas teams: Malisi Club from Hawaii and Moataa’s Auckland-based team. The celebration will close on Sunday, June 8, with an official closing service.

Two new uniforms for the club, designed by Tapa Creations Company, were presented ahead of the celebrations. Mailata Michael Wulf, representing Tapa Creations, said, “It has been a privilege to design these jerseys for the club. We want to be part of the celebration, as we believe it will be a sign of massive support towards the development of sports in Samoa.”

Many former Manu Samoa rugby stars began their careers at Moataa Rugby Club, which is currently building its new club house.
