The Samoa Medical Association opened its 78th Annual General and Scientific Meeting yesterday, with Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa delivering the keynote speech at the Ministry of Health headquarters in Motootua.

This year’s focus is on sepsis, a life-threatening condition described by Fiame as a “silent and devastating threat” that takes lives quickly and often without warning.

Act Fast, Save a Life. Recognise Sepsis,” highlights that every effort to improve understanding, detection, and treatment is an effort to save lives.

Fiame reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling sepsis by strengthening early warning systems, increasing education and awareness, supporting research into diagnostics and treatments, and ensuring frontline healthcare workers have the necessary tools. However, she noted that policy alone is not enough.

“It is knowledge shared here, the partnerships formed, and the ideas born from conferences like this that will ultimately drive progress,” Fiame said.

“Your expertise and leadership are what turn strategy into action and hope into healing.”

The conference brings together doctors, nurses, researchers, and policy makers from across Samoa and the world, united in the fight against sepsis. Fiame acknowledged their dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence.

In addition to focusing on sepsis, the conference recognised nine Honorary Life Members of the Samoa Medical Association for their longstanding service. All over 70 years of age, these members were recognised for their dedication and hard work in serving the community and the country. New doctors were also welcomed into the profession.

The conference continues with discussions and collaborations aimed at improving healthcare outcomes in Samoa.
