A practical training in vegetable cultivation was conducted this week at the Loto Taumafai Society, led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, following a request from the school for support in developing a sustainable vegetable garden.

The training offered students an opportunity to plant a variety of crops including cucumbers, eggplants, and sweet corn. It also formed part of the school’s efforts to improve student access to nutritious food, while promoting overall physical and mental wellbeing.

Staff from the Ministry guided the outdoor session, ensuring students could directly take part in the planting process. The initiative aligns with the Ministry’s goals to promote inclusive farming practices and improve local food production across education institutions.

Loto Taumafai serves students with disabilities, and the activity was designed to accommodate their participation fully. Organisers said the session aimed not only to develop gardening skills, but also to encourage healthier lifestyles and greater self-sufficiency.

The training was delivered in both Samoan and English, and received positive feedback from staff and students alike.
