The Government of Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting community development at the grass-roots level in Samoa through the provision of grants formalised in two signing ceremonies held today (1 October) at the Embassy of Japan in Apia.
The selected recipients under Japan’s fiscal year 2025 allocations are the National Kidney Foundation of Samoa and Aleipata College.
H.E. Mr. SUZUKI Ryotaro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Samoa, signed the grant agreements under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) with representatives of each recipient.

The National Kidney Foundation of Samoa has been awarded a grant of up to SAT 349,413 for the procurement of a mobile clinic vehicle and twenty units of medical equipment, including cholesterol and diabetes testing devices, blood pressure monitors, stethoscopes, and weighing scales. The Foundation’s first mobile clinic vehicle will strengthen outreach services, enabling approximately 3,725 individuals each year to undergo kidney examinations for earlier detection and treatment. Awareness programmes are also expected to reach about 19,300 individuals annually, extending vital services to rural and remote communities as well as schools.

Aleipata College has received a grant of up to SAT 353,001 for the renovation of its school buildings, covering sixteen classrooms and exterior corridors. The improvements will provide a safer and more conducive learning environment for both students and teachers. With its facilities deteriorating over 20 years and further damaged by natural disasters, the school has faced considerable challenges. The renovations are expected to directly benefit 320 students and 19 teachers.
The Government of Japan remains committed to supporting small-scale projects that directly benefit communities at the grass-roots level and to contributing to the socio-economic development of the Independent State of Samoa through its GGP.
The press release was issued by the Embassy of Japan in Samoa under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP).
