The Office of the Attorney General held a soft launch on Tuesday 4th November to mark the beginning of a new mural project for its Witness Interview Room.

The Attorney General, Su’a Hellene Wallwork acknowledges with gratitude the support from the Australian High Commissioner, His Excellency Will Robinson, for funding this collaborative project.

The AG’s objective for this project is to create a space where victims of sexual offences, especially women, young girls and children can feel safe, calm and respected while sharing deeply traumatic experiences.

This project is funded by the Malo grant from the Australian High Commission that also supports the project by Miss Samoa and Miss Pacific, le Afioga Taufaimaletagi Litara Ieremia Allan, on empowerment and encouragement of young tamaita’i Samoa.

The co-creative directors of Leulumoega School of Fine Arts, Reverend Pelenato and faletua Susana Pelenato, are the creative artists bringing this concept to life.

The theme of the Interview room mural is “O LE VA E MALU AI – A SACRED SAFE SPACE”.

The Mural design reflects a place of healing, hope and protection for the young victims especially young girls and children.

The initiative is incorporated into the Miss Samoa and Miss Pacific’s podcast series known as Upu Fa’amalosi that explores themes of strength, resilience and storytelling.

Litara’s involvement contributes to the important conversations on the broader impact of violence ensuring the mural project reach is beyond the room itself.

The soft launch of this project created the opportunity for a Talanoa session with all the contestants for the Miss Samoa 2025. Litara moderated the Talanoa session alongside panellists Attorney General, Su’a Hellene Wallwork, Co-creative director for LSFA, Susana Liufau, Onomea Productions Chair, Leituala Kuiniselani Toelupe Tago and AHC Second Secretary, Meg Somers.

The Talanoa session explored how art, advocacy and community partnership can contribute to eliminating violence against women and children, using the mural project as a case study.

The discussions highlighted the importance of collective action and community conversations in creating safe spaces for children and youth. This allowed the pageant contestants to also reflect on their role as advocates for change.

A cheque presentation was also held to mark the commencement of the interview room transformation.

An official launch of the completed Mural is planned to coincide with the 16 Days of Activism, further providing awareness, creativity, and the shared commitment of Australia and Samoa to empower communities and champion gender equality.

During the event, Australian High Commissioner, Will Robinson also announced Australia’s continued support of $20,000 Malo Grant for the next Miss Samoa to lead another community driven project. He added, Australia’s support is not just financial—it’s relational.

“We stand alongside Samoa in building safe, empowering environments.”
