The National University of Samoa has officially launched the Diploma VI in Sports Science alongside the establishment of the Centre for Sports, Health & Performance Excellence (SHAPE), marking a significant milestone in Samoa’s education, health, and sports development. The opening prayer was delivered by Rev. Malotau Lafolaga, who blessed the launch and its purpose.

Speaking at the launch, Honourable Aiono Dr Alec Ekeroma, Minister of Education and Culture, emphasised the importance of professionalising Samoa’s sports sector through accredited qualifications and applied research. “For decades, sport in Samoa has thrived on passion and volunteerism. Today, with SHAPE and the Diploma VI, we take a bold step forward to ensure structured pathways, professional standards, and evidence-based practices support our athletes, coaches, administrators, and educators,” he said.

The Diploma VI in Sports Science has already attracted strong interest, with up to 13 students enrolled in its first intake. In addition, more than 36 first-year Bachelor of Education students have declared Health and Physical Education as their teaching major, reflecting the growing desire among young Samoans to teach sport, fitness, physical education, and health education. SHAPE will strengthen school programmes, offer qualifications from certificates to degrees, and conduct applied research to address public health challenges such as noncommunicable diseases. Partnerships with SASNOC, sporting federations, and regional universities will also prepare Samoa for global opportunities, including the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

The Ministry of Education and Culture has reaffirmed its commitment to the programme through scholarships for Diploma VI students, supporting the development of sport specialists, strengthening health and physical education in schools, and advancing coach development nationwide. This launch represents a national commitment to excellence, inclusion, and resilience, positioning Samoa as a regional hub for sports education and research.

This is a press release issued by the National University of Samoa (NUS) – Feb 2026.
