Samoa has officially launched the theme and emblem for its 64th Independence celebrations, with this year’s theme set as “Samoa ua tasi mo se amataga fou” or “Samoa united for a new beginning.”
According to a report by Savali Newspaper, the launch forms the opening stage of preparations for Samoa’s 2026 Independence celebrations.
The report said the main purpose of the programme is to remember the hard work and struggles of Samoa’s forebears in securing the country’s independence.
At the official launch, Deputy Prime Minister Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molio’o said the theme and emblem were selected through a public competition that was opened to Samoans living in Samoa and overseas.
Savali reported that 11 entries were received before the competition closed. The entries were assessed by the Independence Preparations Committee using judging criteria set for the competition, while Cabinet approved a SAT$3,000 cash prize for the winning entry.

The winning design was submitted by Jack Olaf Lafoa’i, 34, of Utuali’i and Fatitū in Saleimoa.
Savali said the emblem reflects Samoa’s journey through the image of the canoe sail, symbolising a voyage across the ocean that has reached the shores of Samoa. The design also uses the colours of the national flag, red, white and blue.
Other elements in the emblem include the tanoa, ‘ava cup, fue and to’oto’o, which were described as symbols of Samoan culture and its link with Christianity. Traditional Samoan attire and tattoo motifs are also reflected in the design.
Mulipola said Samoa’s journey since 1962 has been guided by faith in God, and that unity remains central as the country moves forward.
She also thanked all those who entered the competition, saying the committee had seen a wide range of ideas and expressions in the submissions.
Savali further reported that the emblem and theme are now legally registered as government property, and that any use of them must follow the required legal process.
Preparations for Samoa’s 64th Independence celebrations are now under way.
