The Republic of Korea’s newly appointed Ambassador to Samoa, His Excellency Mr Byung-ha Chung, formally presented his Letter of Credence to the Head of State, Afioga Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II, during a ceremony held at the official residence in Vailele on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.

The presentation officially accredits Mr Chung as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Samoa, continuing diplomatic relations between the two countries that began on 15 September 1972.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Chung reaffirmed South Korea’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding friendship with Samoa, particularly as both countries prepare to commemorate 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2027.

He highlighted the importance of continued cooperation in addressing climate change and supporting regional priorities under the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. The Ambassador also expressed his commitment to deepening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The Head of State welcomed Ambassador Chung and acknowledged the cordial relationship that Samoa and South Korea have maintained over the past 54 years. He recognised the importance of people-to-people connections and the cooperation that has developed between the two countries.

Afioga Tuimalealiifano also reaffirmed Samoa’s commitment to strengthening relations through Korea-Pacific cooperation, particularly in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development across the Pacific region.

South Korea has supported Samoa through development assistance, educational opportunities and professional training programmes, including initiatives delivered through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). These programmes have contributed to skills development and capacity building within Samoa’s workforce.

Ambassador Chung brings extensive diplomatic experience to his appointment. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in German from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul and joined South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993.

His diplomatic career includes postings to the United States, Iran and Kuwait, as well as senior leadership responsibilities within the ministry. He previously served as Director-General for International Organisations and Ambassador to Kuwait.

In September 2024, he was appointed Government Representative for Polar Affairs and Special Representative for the Reconstruction of Ukraine within South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ambassador Chung is based in Wellington, New Zealand, where the South Korean Embassy also maintains diplomatic accreditation to Samoa and several other Pacific Island countries.
