Samoa’s Prime Minister joined dignitaries and guests in a special reception at Taumeasina Island Resort, to commemorate the 185th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, reinforcing the strong ties between Samoa and New Zealand.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of New Zealand, acknowledging the Treaty of Waitangi’s significance as a foundation of national unity and a reflection of Aotearoa’s rich history and culture.

“This occasion is an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come in our partnerships towards the achievement of common goals for people, peace, and prosperity,” the Prime Minister stated. “Have they remained relevant and mutually beneficial?”

The event featured a performance from the Kapa Haka group “Te Paringa Tai” from Tauranga, who had earlier entertained the Samoan public at Matagialalua Friendship Park with a vibrant display of New Zealand’s cultural heritage. Their presence symbolised the deep people-to-people connections between the two nations.

The Prime Minister highlighted the close and historic relationship between Samoa and New Zealand, underscored by the unique Treaty of Friendship. High-level visits by heads of state, ministers, and parliamentarians have demonstrated the strength of this partnership and mutual respect.

Reflecting on the recent hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for New Zealand’s support, which helped ensure the success of the event. “What we did not have the resources for was provided, the capacity gaps were filled, and the readiness to support was assured,” the Prime Minister noted, emphasizing the importance of collaboration.

A key focus of the speech was the 2024 Statement of Partnership – O le Fogavaa e Tasi, which reaffirms priority areas of cooperation, including security, community empowerment, climate resilience, and economic growth. These align with Samoa’s national development goals.

In addition, the Prime Minister acknowledged New Zealand’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection, particularly in the Operation Resolution for the HMNZS Manawanui, aimed at removing fuel and pollutants from Samoan waters.

The speech concluded with an optimistic outlook for continued cooperation. “We look forward to the continuation of the excellent bilateral relations and partnership between Samoa and New Zealand for the benefit of our two countries and our peoples,” the Prime Minister affirmed before proposing a toast to New Zealand’s unity and prosperity in honour of Waitangi Day.
