Samoa gathered at dawn today to join the global commemoration of ANZAC Day, remembering the sacrifices of New Zealanders, Australians, and Pacific Islanders who served in wars and conflicts around the world.

Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Tuala Tevaga Ponifasio delivered the keynote address at the ceremony, acknowledging the bravery of those who fought in World War I, World War II, and subsequent battles.

“Today we are all united in remembrance of their fight for our freedom, independence and for our future as peaceful communities,” said Tuala.

He reminded the gathering that even though many have not personally experienced war, its devastation has shaped the values and boundaries of peaceful societies today. Tuala called on all to keep alive the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the security of future generations.

ANZAC Day, observed every 25 April across Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, and other Commonwealth nations, marks the anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landing at Gallipoli in 1915 during World War I. It has since become a day to honour all military personnel who have served and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.

“We wear on our hearts the poppy of remembrance,” Tuala said. “For today and forever, let us never forget those who made the greatest contribution to ensure our security.”

The ceremony brought together members of the diplomatic corps, the Head of State and Masiofo, and representatives from the Australian and New Zealand High Commissions, reinforcing Samoa’s enduring ties with its Pacific neighbours.
