Poultry Market Day, held on Tuesday, May 30th, 2023, was an extraordinary event organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and various stakeholders. The gathering took place at the Malaefatu Reserve Park in Sogi.
Afioga Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Schmidt, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, graced the occasion and delivered a captivating keynote address. With admiration, he commended the relentless efforts of poultry producers and encouraged them to further develop and expand their production to ensure food and nutrition security for the nation. Representing the FAO, Mr. Joseph Nyemah also shared insightful remarks during his speech, highlighting the organisation’s support and commitment to the poultry sector.
The Poultry Market Day marked a significant milestone as it was the first of its kind in the region. The primary objective was to bring together local chicken farmers, enabling them to explore and tap into the vast market potential of their products, whether for breeding purposes or consumption. It served as a remarkable opportunity for poultry farmers to engage in fruitful discussions, determine optimal selling prices for their offerings, interact with potential clients, and exchange knowledge and experiences with enthusiastic members of the public. By acting as a platform for enhanced visibility of poultry products, this event aimed to meet and surpass consumer expectations.
The realisation of this event was made possible through the FAO Technical Cooperation Project entitled “Support to address vulnerabilities to agriculture, nutrition, and food security due to COVID-19.” The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries expressed sincere gratitude for the unwavering support provided by the FAO in fostering the growth and progress of the agriculture and fisheries sectors in Samoa.
For those seeking further information regarding poultry production and development, the Animal Production and Health Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries welcomes inquiries and stands ready to offer guidance and assistance. This exciting initiative not only showcases the dedication of the poultry industry but also highlights the collective efforts in promoting sustainable agriculture and ensuring a prosperous future for Samoa.
