Samoa emerged victorious in their Group A match against Tonga in the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship 2023 after a tightly contested game. Despite a dogged defensive display and outstanding goalkeeping from Tonga’s Madison Tenifa, Samoa’s three second-half goals proved decisive as they aimed to advance to the knockout stages.
In the first half, Samoa dominated play but struggled to find a way past Tenifa, who made several impressive saves to keep the score level. Tenifa denied Lilly Dowsing in the 5th minute and produced exceptional stops against Maylania Mikaele, including a remarkable save in the 17th minute. Whitney Avei came closest to scoring when her strike hit the crossbar.
Tonga worked hard to reverse the momentum and had a chance through Leeann Taufa’ao, whose shot narrowly missed the target. Tenifa continued her heroics with another notable save before halftime, blocking Dowsing’s left-footed effort.
Tonga started the second half with renewed energy and nearly took the lead when Anita Hufunga’s shot tested goalkeeper Tsehai Viliamu. However, Samoa regained control and broke the deadlock in the 60th minute as Arianna Skeers found space in the Tonga penalty area and calmly slotted the ball into the corner.
Minutes later, Samoa extended their lead with a rebound goal from Avei after Tenifa parried a cross. Avei added her second and Samoa’s third goal with a powerful shot from midfield, putting the game out of reach. Tonga managed to score a consolation goal late in the match when Ana Fakavai capitalized on a defensive lapse.
This victory is crucial for Samoa as they aim to progress to the knockout stage, while Tonga will need a win in their final match against New Caledonia to keep their tournament hopes alive in Fiji.
